Why Smart Cities Still Run on Inductive Loop Detectors

Someone cutting a vehicle loop

Smart city investment is pulling vehicle detection along with it. The global inductive loop vehicle detector market is projected to reach $1.8 billion by 2033, growing at a 5.9% CAGR from 2026 through 2033.

It would be easy to assume newer sensor technologies have pushed the inductive loop aside. They haven't. Since their introduction in the early 1960s, inductive loops have become the most-used sensor in traffic management, and for good reason: they feed actuated signal controllers real-time vehicle-presence data, exactly what modern signal timing depends on. The concept is simple. A loop of insulated wire is installed in or beneath the pavement and connected to a detector in a nearby controller cabinet. When a vehicle passes over or stops within the loop, it lowers the loop's inductance, and the detector relays that vehicle's presence to the controller. That simplicity is a feature, not a limitation. It makes loops accurate, dependable, and economical at the scale a city needs.

Where Smart Cities Use Loops

Traffic management is already the largest use for loop detection, accounting for 41.1% of the market. Across a city's road network, loops handle four core jobs:

  • Actuated signal timing Loops let controllers extend green phases for queued traffic and skip unused phases instead of running fixed cycles.
  • Vehicle counting and congestion data A standard 6' x 6' intersection loop collects count and occupancy data around the clock, feeding congestion management and long-range planning.
  • Priority vehicle control Loops help identify buses, ambulances, and fire trucks moving through busy corridors so signals can grant them priority.
  • Smart parking and drive-thru/access applications Beyond signalized intersections, smart parking expansion and drive-thru operations are adding steady demand for reliable detection.

Preformed Loops for Every Detection Application

Preformed loop systems already lead the market with a 56% share of installations, largely because they cut installation time and disruption. National Loop Company preformed loops are made in America and arrive fully assembled and ready to install, so crews spend less time in the lane and traffic keeps moving.

Saw-Cut Preformed Loops

The go-to for detection in existing pavement. These non-spliced, machine-twisted loops fit a 1" deep saw cut and seal cleanly for accurate, long-lasting detection.

Direct Burial Preformed Loops

The right choice for new construction: paving, concrete, asphalt, or gravel roadways. Each loop is encased in heavy-duty, liquid-tight conduit that protects it from sharp stones, chemicals, and inclement weather.

Surface-Mounted Loops

Built for post-tensioned concrete structures like parking garages, where saw cutting can be dangerous. They mount above ground and are popular in parking access and revenue control (PARCS) applications.

Loop Installation Accessories

Everything crews need to finish the job, from loop sealant and dispensing guns to asphalt and concrete saw blades.

Whether the project is a signalized intersection, a bus priority corridor, or a smart parking entrance, the system is only as good as the loop in the pavement. Preformed loops make the reliable choice the fast choice: less labor, less downtime, and detection a city can count on for years
